Dental Bonding Overview
There are many reasons that you may require the treatment known as dental bonding, and at Bongiorno Dentistry in Brooklyn, NY, we are glad to make it available to patients who are good candidates for this solution.
What is tooth bonding? As your dentist in Brooklyn, NY, we might suggest the use of bonding for:
- Cracked teeth
- Gapped teeth
- Discolored teeth that won’t respond to whitening
- Teeth that have had large, amalgam fillings removed
- Chipped or broken teeth
Often described as cosmetic bonding, we also view dental bonding as restorative and preventative. This is because the resin that is applied to the tooth will also strengthen it and block it from sustaining any further damage or decay.
The treatment is extremely simple and straightforward. You will visit our office and after we examine the issue, and decide that restorative or cosmetic dentistry is needed, and that dental bonding is a workable solution, we get to work. We will need to make any repairs or treatments to the tooth. This could include removing a large metal filling, and dealing with any decay.
We then apply a special adhesive gel that will keep the composite resin in place on the surface of the tooth. Our team then molds the resin as needed – spreading it out over the tooth to give it an entirely natural appearance. Special ultraviolet light fixtures are needed to cure the dental bonding, hardening it and making it a material that is almost as strong as natural teeth. The final touch is to polish the surface and ensure the outcome is as desired.
Any dental bonding is going to be colored to match the surrounding teeth and will be entirely undetectable from them.
Does this mean you no longer have to care for the tooth in the same way? Actually, a tooth that has been treated with bonding will still require the same daily brushing and flossing, regular cleanings and checkups. Traditionally, a good application of bonding is going to last for more than ten years, and you can guarantee that time span by taking the best care of the teeth and gums as possible.
If you have damaged, discolored, or amalgam filled teeth, the bonding process could be the ideal solution.
